Using and Caring for Your Chawan Matcha Bowl

When it comes to using a chawan, there are some essential guidelines to follow:

  1. Preparation: Begin by warming your chawan with hot water to maintain the ideal temperature for your matcha. This also enhances the flavor and aroma of the tea.
  2. Whisking: Use a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) to froth your matcha. The shape of the chawan and the broad bottom help create a smooth and creamy froth.
  3. Appreciation: Take a moment to appreciate the design and craftsmanship of your chawan. The tactile experience of holding the bowl and sipping the tea is an essential part of the ritual.

Caring for your chawan is equally important to ensure it lasts longer:

  1. Cleaning: After each use, rinse your chawan with warm water and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. Avoid using soap or abrasive materials that could damage the material.
  2. Storage: Store your chawan in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or extreme temperature changes.
  3. Enjoyment: Regular use can enhance the patina and character of your chawan, so don’t hesitate to make it a part of your daily tea ritual.

In conclusion, the chawan is more than just a vessel for matcha; it is a piece of culture and art. The craftsmanship that goes into these matcha bowls enrich the experience of enjoying matcha. So, the next time you savor a bowl of matcha, remember that you’re not just drinking tea; you’re embracing a centuries-old tradition and immersing yourself in the world of traditions and aesthetics, while embracing mindfulness and healthy lifestyle.

Do you need a special matcha bowl?

It is not necessary to have a specific matcha bowl to make and drink matcha green tea. However, there are certain characteristics of a matcha bowl or chawan, that you should consider preparing a genuine ceremonial matcha green tea. Chawans generally have a wide base, which gives enough space to shake the whisk vigorously in Z or M pattern. This creates a rich foamy lather on the top, if you are using good quality ceremonial grade matcha. Wider base also gives stability to the bowl when whisking vigourously. Also, the bowl much be deep and high enough to avoid spilling when whisking.

Our matcha bowl (chasen) is 600 ml volume, with wide based and meet above characteristics. The spout on top adds to the practicality of pouring matcha in another cup or bowl to share or enjoy in smaller quantities.
